Floaters are small spots or cobweb-like shapes that drift through your field of vision. Flashes may appear like lightning streaks or camera flashes in the peripheral vision.
Many floaters and flashes are caused by normal aging changes inside the eye. However, a sudden increase in floaters or flashes can sometimes signal a retinal tear or retinal detachment.
Warning signs that require urgent evaluation include a sudden shower of floaters, persistent flashes of light, blurry vision, or a curtain or shadow moving across your vision.
A retinal tear or detachment is considered an eye emergency. Early treatment can help prevent permanent vision loss.
If you experience sudden changes in your vision, contact Midwest Retina Consultants immediately for an evaluation.
